The Two Clubs Most Golfers Refuse To Pull

Fairway Woods & Hybrids: From Practice to Play

Six weeks with Tim and Todd Graves. Tim starts with the clubs themselves. Todd fixes the strike. Tim finishes on the golf course. You end up with clubs you actually want in your hands on the 200-yard shot — and a plan for every one of them.

Taught by

Todd Graves

Co-founder, Graves Golf. Author of The Single Plane Golf Swing. Ten years standing next to Moe Norman. Teaches the instruction weeks, 2–4.

Tim Graves, PGA

"One of the most common questions we get — multiple times a week, for twenty-five years — is when do I hit a hybrid and when do I hit an iron? Nobody has ever sat down and answered it properly. That's what these six weeks are."

— TIM GRAVES, PGA · Callaway Master Professional

Dear fellow golfer,

There's a club in your bag you've stopped trusting.

Maybe it's the 3-wood off the deck. Maybe it's the 4-hybrid you bought because a long iron was impossible, and now the hybrid is impossible too. You stand over a 200-yard shot, you look in the bag, and you already know how it's going to go — so you lay up with a 7-iron and take your bogey.

That's not a swing problem. Here's what it actually is:

You're playing them the same way. A hybrid is a long-iron replacement — it wants a descending strike and a divot. A fairway wood wants a sweep. Most golfers use one motion for both, so one of them is always wrong.

Your ball position is guessed, not built. A 3-hybrid and a 7-hybrid do not sit in the same place. Long hybrids belong in the zone with a wider stance. Short hybrids play from iron position. Get that backwards and you'll compensate for the rest of your life.

Your clubs may not fit. Most off-the-rack hybrids are built too upright for a Single Plane golfer. That's a heel-digging, pull-hooking machine — and no amount of practice fixes an equipment problem.

Nobody ever taught you when to use them. Rough. Fairway bunker. Into the wind. Under a tree. Into the grain around the green. There are right answers to all of these, and almost no golfer knows them.

Here's the part that should make you a little angry: this is the widest gap in the average golfer's bag, and it sits on the exact shots that decide your score. Long par 3s. Second shots into par 5s. Tight driving holes. The 200-yard approach.

Fix these two clubs and you don't just hit better shots — you get holes back that you've been giving away for years.

Six weeks. Two instructors. One club you finally trust.

This is a guided Single Plane University class — not a video library you binge and forget. It runs on a schedule: three modules delivered across each week, a weekly call to action where you send video in for your coach to review, and one live Zoom Q&A every week with Tim and Todd.

And it runs in three distinct phases — in this order, on purpose:

Week 1Tim Graves, PGA

The clubs themselves

Before you swing anything, you find out what these clubs actually are — the real difference between a fairway wood and a hybrid, and which of them you personally should be carrying. Most golfers have never been told, and half of them are carrying the wrong ones.

Weeks 2–4Todd Graves

How to hit them

Three weeks of instruction. Setup, ball position, procedure, low point, and the two different strikes these clubs require. This is where the topped 3-wood and the fat hybrid go away.

Weeks 5–6Tim Graves, PGA

Putting them in play

Out on the golf course. Not just clean lies in the middle of the fairway — off the tee, out of fairway bunkers, from low, mid and high rough, working the ball high and low, and yes, chipping with them.

The live Zoom day moves week to week around Tim's teaching schedule — you'll get the time in advance. Those calls are capped at 15 people, which is the real limit on this class.

The six weeks, in order

Fundamentals → Contact → Consistency → Application → Shotmaking → Performance. Nothing is skipped and nothing is out of order.

Week 1Which Clubs Belong In Your BagTim

Theme: The Clubs Themselves

  • The real difference between a fairway wood and a hybrid
  • Who should be hitting woods, who should be hitting hybrids — and why
  • 3-wood vs 5-wood vs 7-wood vs hybrid lofts: carry, rollout, and gapping
  • A fitting check on your own bag, including the lie-angle problem

Call to action: Send in your current bag makeup and your gapping

Week 2Setup, Procedure & Ball PositionTodd

Theme: Instruction Begins

  • Single Plane setup for woods and hybrids: stance width, spine angle, alignment
  • Ball position by club length — the zone vs iron position
  • Why a 3-hybrid and a 7-hybrid don't sit in the same place
  • Building a setup procedure you can repeat under pressure

Call to action: Face-on and down-the-line setup video

Week 3Swing Arc & Solid ContactTodd

Theme: Learning to Strike It Clean

  • Why golfers top fairway woods — and why they hit behind hybrids
  • Managing low point so contact stops being a coin flip
  • Fairway wood: sweeping, width, release
  • Hybrid: iron-like delivery, compression, and the divot

Call to action: Contact session video — one wood, one hybrid

Week 4Consistency & Distance ControlTodd

Theme: Repetition Creates Confidence

  • Launch fundamentals, face and path, managing curvature
  • Stock yardages: carry vs total, and realistic expectations
  • Structured practice — random vs block, target training

Call to action: Ball flight video plus your completed gapping chart

Week 5Every Lie On The Golf CourseTim

Theme: Putting Them In Play

  • Full shots and half shots from the fairway
  • Off the tee on tight driving holes
  • Fairway bunkers — where a hybrid beats an iron outright
  • Low, mid and high rough: when to hit it and when to put it away
  • Tight lies, uphill, downhill and sidehill

Call to action: Rough and uneven lie video

Week 6Shotmaking & ScoringTim

Theme: Trust It And Play

  • Hitting cuts and draws with woods and hybrids
  • Working the ball high and low, and playing the wind
  • Chipping with hybrids and fairway woods — including into the grain
  • Smart aggression, position golf, and your personal playbook

Call to action: Full evaluation — wood and hybrid, plus your written playbook

The Final Challenge

The Fairway Woods & Hybrids Combine

Six weeks in, you don't get a certificate. You get tested — the same way we test students at the schools. Five events, scored.

Contact Test

10 consecutive solid strikes

Accuracy Test

Hit designated fairway targets

Distance Test

Demonstrate your known yardages

Situational Test

Rough, tight lie, and recovery

On-Course Assessment

Apply both clubs across a 9-hole round

Three bonus modules

Bonus 1 — Equipment Optimization

Shaft fitting, loft gapping, adjustable hosels, and set composition. The lie-angle problem alone is worth the module for a Single Plane golfer.

Bonus 2 — Hybrid Scoring Secrets

Using hybrids around trouble and around the green, plus when conservative beats aggressive.

Bonus 3 — Fairway Woods Confidence Builder

The mental side: pre-shot routines, commitment, and rebuilding trust with a club that's burned you.

A few honest warnings before you enroll

This is a class, not a course you own. It runs on a schedule with a start date and live calls. Modules land through the week and there's a call to action attached to each one. If you're not going to send video in, you'll get a fraction of the value — and you'll take a Zoom seat from someone who would have used it.

You may find out your clubs are wrong. A real possibility. If your hybrid's lie angle is fighting your Single Plane setup, we're going to tell you — and fixing it may cost money we don't get. We'd rather you know.

Some of you should be carrying fewer hybrids. Tim will say it plainly: if you can't make a divot, higher-lofted fairway woods may make this game easier than hybrids ever will. That's an honest answer, not a sales pitch.

The live Zooms cap at 15. That's not a marketing number — it's how many people Tim and Todd can actually coach on a call. The day moves week to week around Tim's teaching schedule, and when the seats are full, they're full.

Read that middle column again.

Look at the two middle numbers. A Level 3 member pays $297 and owns this one class. Level 4 Elite costs the same $297/month — and this class is included in it.

Identical money. The difference is what happens after the six weeks. One of them ends when the class ends. The other keeps going: a personal coach on your swing, all five guided classes we release each year, Single Plane 30 any month you want it, and the entire SPU Library — over $12,000 of training. Level 4 bills monthly and you can leave whenever you want.

Questions golfers ask

How much time does this actually take?

10–15 minutes a day of training, plus two short videos a week for your coach to review, plus one live Zoom if you can make it. The weekly challenges happen during rounds you were already going to play.

I don't carry a fairway wood off the deck. Is half this class wasted on me?

No — and that assumption is exactly what Week 1 and Bonus 1 are for. Part of this class is deciding what should be in your bag in the first place. Some students finish carrying more woods and fewer hybrids. Some the opposite. Both are wins.

Do I need a launch monitor or a fancy setup?

No. You need a phone to film your two weekly videos, somewhere to hit balls, and a course to play your weekly challenges. That's it.

What if I can't make the live Zoom calls?

They're recorded and posted. But the seat cap exists because live is where the coaching happens — if you can make even half of them, make them.

I'm not a Single Plane golfer. Will this still work?

Todd's instruction weeks are taught in the Single Plane model, so you'll get the most out of those if that's your swing. Week 1 and Weeks 5–6 with Tim — club selection, fitting, and how to play these clubs on the course — apply to any golfer.

I'm a Level 4 member. Do I really not pay anything?

Correct. Guided classes are included in your membership. Use the Reserve My Seat button so your coach can prep your baseline and hold your Zoom spot.

If I upgrade to Level 4, am I locked in?

No. Level 4 Elite is a monthly membership at $297/month and you can cancel any time. That's the same $297 a Level 3 member would spend on this class alone — except at Level 4 the class is included, and so is a personal coach, every guided class we run, and the full SPU Library. If it isn't for you after the six weeks, you leave.

How are the lessons actually delivered?

Three modules land across each week, on different days — not all at once. Each week has a call to action attached, where you send video in for your coach to review. And there's one live Q&A Zoom every week with Tim and Todd. The Zoom day moves week to week around Tim's teaching schedule; you'll get the time in advance.

What happens after the six weeks?

You keep the class in the Single Plane University Library, along with your written playbook, gapping chart, and combine scores. Members can retake it any time it runs.

Stop laying up with a 7-iron.

Every golfer has a distance where the round quietly goes sideways. For most of the people we teach, it's 180 to 230 yards — the exact gap fairway woods and hybrids were invented to cover, and the exact gap almost nobody has ever been properly taught.

Six weeks from now you can still be avoiding those clubs. Or you can know your two strikes, know your yardages, know your bag fits, and know which club comes out of the bag on a long par 3 into the wind — because you wrote it down.

P.S. — The single most common question we get at Graves Golf, multiple times a week for twenty-five years, is "when do I hit a hybrid and when do I hit an iron?" We have never sat down and answered it completely until now. Week 5 alone covers rough, fairway bunkers, wind, punch shots under trees, and chipping into the grain — with a specific right answer for each.

P.P.S. — If you're a Level 3 member, read the two numbers one more time. $297 buys you this class and nothing else. The same $297/month buys Level 4 Elite — where this class is included, along with a coach, every guided class we run, and the full SPU Library. Cancel any time. Take the upgrade instead →

P.P.P.S. — The class is underway and enrollment is rolling — you can start today. You get every module from Week 1, and every week you wait is a week of coached video reviews and live Zooms you didn't use.
